Fab-Culture Perma-Lab Wildcard 2018

The aim of this 10% project for you, my peach, to invent and resolve to design a proto-typable, Permaculture orientated product, to inspire, innovation and attract users to Fab Labs and Permaculture, as well as show the potential of these two initiatives. This empowers prospective communities to recreate your invention, which in the process of making, cultivates learning, the transfer of knowledge, skill sharing and innovation. Your design solution will also illustrate how Permaculture can improve communities and inform design and new designers.

This year Fab Lab, Permaculture and the Living Room are working together like ctrl C & ctrl V. The Living is a space to inspire and is all about promoting a unique urban eco-system. Greenside Design Center, Fab Lab, Permaculture, The Living Room and their sister project Temple Botanica will be working together to create a new sustainable environment for communities, business initiatives and designers

Temple Botanica is a location right outside Jo’burg city and is a paradise for plants to thrive with their iconic geo-dome as well as spacious, cascading back yard. Temple Botanica aims to grow and care for plants in the most sustainable ways as possible along with keeping their restaurant, The Living Room running, with décor coming from Temple B as well as providing an Airbnb on Temple Botanica.

In our group we were given the opportunity to create our own brief. This meant going to Temple Botanica and identifying the problems that they faced or maybe ways in which they wanted to grow.

After listening carefully and gathering as much possible information we decided on what our project would be. Temple Botanica needed to attract more customers so we decided to redesign their entrance. Our aim was to create a user experience which transported the users into a new world, being Temple Botanica. We also designed a system that allows people to grow their plants virtually from their phone as it grows at Temple Botanica

Problem Statement: Temple Botanica needs to use the entrance in an effective way to attract customers and design an experience for users that “transports” them into Temple Botanica.

In order to overcome our problem we came up with our primary objectives that needed completion;

  • Entrance redesign
  • showcase the natural aspect of Temple Botanica
  • attract new customers
  • create a visual statement
  • transport users through an experience

As a group we created designs for the:

  • Front Gate
  • Depot & Walkway
  • The Entrance

  • Creation of an interactive platform to attract new clients to Temple Botanica and get people interested in Permaculture. We achieved this by creating The Interactive: Botanigotchi
    • Using the app IFTTT (if This Then That)we have created a system for Temple Botanica to use g-mail addresses to turn on specific hive active plugs which will automatically switch on when the email is received. This will turn on the water pump and water the users plant at Temple Botanica.
