Fab-Culture Perma-Lab Plantship 2019

The aim of this 10% project for you, my peach, to invent and resolve to design a proto-typable, Permaculture orientated product, to inspire, innovation and attract users to Fab Labs and Permaculture, as well as show the potential of these two initiatives. This empowers prospective communities to recreate your invention, which in the process of making, cultivates learning, the transfer of knowledge, skill sharing and innovation. Your design solution will also illustrate how Permaculture can improve communities and inform design and new designers.

Emmarentia is a suburb situated in Johannesburg and is known for its craft restaurants, artisanal shops and the occasional concert in the park.  Some of the points of interest that make up Emmarentia are Emmarentia Dam, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Melville Koppies and Marks Park Sports Club.

The aim of this 10% project is to invent and resolve to design a proto-typable, Permaculture orientated product, to inspire, innovation and attract users to Fab Labs (SDG 9) and Permaculture(SDG 15), as well as show the potential of these two initiatives. This empowers prospective communities to recreate your invention, which in the process of making, cultivates learning, the transfer of knowledge, skill sharing and innovation. Your design solution will also illustrate how Permaculture can improve communities and inform design and new designers.

What you are required to do is to find a situation in the Emmarentia area that is necessary, but currently makes use of a system that is non-sustainable, and create a design intervention that makes it sustainable and fun to do.

HOW WE HELPED

Problem Statement: People that visit Emmarentia Dam botanical gardens don’t meaningfully engage with the existing herb garden, it is dull and does not attract users that could potentially take an interest in the general care of the garden.

WHAT WE DID

INSPIRATION

Our project uses the already set up seed trading system at the botanical garden. Where the garden trades with other international gardens.

The lots that the people are using in this project are inspired by the lotmans of WWII.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Where there are people there are lonely people and thus our project gives a platform for these people to meet each other. This system is more targeted towards lonely people between the ages of 25-30  who likes or want to learn more about gardening, but might not have space or the motivation at home.

The Johannesburg Garden Club has a club member count of 200 but there are many more people on their wait list.

As a way to promote this service we designed Instagram posts that both attracts the users attention and informs them about our website.

The website is the face of this system, it is where the user will learn what the service is all about. You will also do your personality quiz here to determine the users personality.

The seed packet has your seed group and the lot in which you will plant your seed into.

The seed packets include instructions on how to care and grow the plant.

This could be traded back into the system after your plant has finished growing.
