Origins Rock Bulge Marketing 2017

Origins Centre 2017

The Origins Centre is the world’s only museum dedicated to exploring and celebrating the history of modern humankind. The Museum provides visitors with a unique experience of Africa’s rich, complex heritage and boasts an extensive collection of rock art from the Wits Rock Art Research Institute.

The aim of the project is to explore and deliver design solutions on the subject of the Middle Stone Age. This will take the form of redesigning portions of the entrance hall exhibit as well as conceptualising a space and interactive areas concerning Blombos Cave (Cave Quest).

The focus of this project is on the innovations of Middle Stone Age period in southern Africa. The archaeology of this period reflects a plethora of new and innovative items that have helped archaeologists understand the timing and location of the development of complex (or ‘modern’) human behavior. Blombos Cave is an extremely significant MSA site that has produced phenomenal archaeological material. This project links up with a new museum and interpretative centre that is being built in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, on the southern Cape coast. The opening of the De Hoop Human Origins Centre is planned for 2018.

WHAT WE DID

Our group was tasked with one of the marketing campaigns and given the challenge of creating an animation, Banner, Street pole advertisement and web banner. The aim for the animation was to make an animated short that illustrates the journey of the rock bulges from where they were found and how they eventually got to the Wits University Origins Centre. For the banners, street poles and web banner, we wanted to design something simple that drew attention to the Origins Centre and present the idea of what our origins are. To start off the initial planning of how we were going to go about designing and bringing our ideas to life we knew that the rock bulges contained important symbolic meaning behind them and our task was to communicate this in a way that is easy to understand. The animated short approached this task by using simplistic design that is easy to watch and understand. With the banners and street pole advertisements we thought out various ways in which to go about how we drew the attention of people whom might only catch a glimpse of it. So we had the challenge of planning the imagery in a way that is simple, eye-catching and easy to understand. In general practice, one must assume for a street pole ad to only be seen for 3 seconds. At first our initial idea was to use the same imagery from our animation on the street pole ads one after each other to create the same effect one would get by creating a stop frame animation.
